Paul Mauriat was the second French band leader, who sold in USA more than a 1 million copies of the record. The first was Franck Pourcel, when his single «Only you» became the best seller record in 1959, sharing the success of the American group «The Platters». American success of Paul Mauriat in February of ‘1968 exceeded expectations and brought him two gold discs. The instrumental record «L’amour est bleu» suddenly became No. 1. It was the most grandiose triumph of the French orchestra and French music, which no longer happened.

Paul Mauriat said in 1968:
«I think we can not explain why a music piece gets to success, we never know. There is no magic formula which we are able analyze exactly, but Americans told me they hope that it’s a new twist to something a little more melodic in the music.»

Unpredictable success, which is very American, provoked a wild demand for the work of composer Andre Popp. More than 250 artists all over the world recorded his «Love is Blue» during just 2 years.
During the second international fair in Cannes, MIDEM ‘1968, representatives of several American artists expressed a desire to record «Love is Blue», although a year ago they were not interested in this outsider of Eurovision Song Contest ‘67!

Cash Box (USA) 1968/02/10, «FRANCE»:
…The greatest sensation for French Trade was the fantastic success in the States of Paul Mauriat’s «Love is Blue». This song, which had been presented one year ago at the Eurovision song contest by Luxemburg, is going to be recorded by Bing Crosby, Al Martino, Johnny Mathis (CBS), Klaus Ogerman (Mercury), Charlie Byrd (CBS). 35,000 sheet music have been already sold in the States. This createtd at MIDEM an enthusiastic rush of foreign publishers to buy the different songs written by composer Andre Popp and author Pierre Cour. This is not the only reason which made Jean Pierard, Tutti manager, a really happy publisher…

Cash Box magazine (USA) 1968/02/17 :
…The most fantastic surprise for Tutti however was the fabulous success of Paul Mauriat’s «Love is Blue» in the United States. Pierard can’t forget that a year ago, during first MIDEM, he unsuccessfully tried to sell the song to, American publishers present in Cannes.

Журнал «Cash Box» (США) 1968/02/17 :

Love is Blue»?

What was the secret of the success of «Love is Blue»?
It is said that the recording without vocals has few chances, on the other hand the instrumental composition is understandable without words to everyone. Hundreds of new instrumental tracks appear every year in the world. And a great melody and arrangement does not guarantee success…
Recording can become fashionable when it deserves the possibility of much repetition, if there is some appeal in the music. Of course, very important also the melody should have a right title.
So success was more natural, especially long before «Love is Blue», Paul Mauriat had a rich experience in recording studios and he did not stop working hard.
And finally, the decisive thing was that American businessmen were interesting to recordings of the best European artists, in particular the Paul Mauriat orchestra. These people were musicians themselves. They did not believe in randomness, they just did their job well…

In 1962, Philips Records, subsidiary of the leaders of the American market, Mercury Records, began to produce jazz albums by Michel Legrand and the albums of French The Swingle Singers singing Mozart and Bach. At the end of 1965 among the «elected» performers was the Paul Mauriat orchestra.

Cash Box magazine (USA) 1965/10/09, «MERCURY’S REIZNER BACK IN U.S. WITH MANY DEALS»:
«CHICAGO — Lou Reizner, import coordinator for Mercury Records, returned here last week after a month-long swing thru the United Kingdom and continental Europe, discussing possible product exchange between Mercury and its affiliated labels and foreign licensees.
Reizner’s junket was his second annual swing across the Atlantic and was occasioned by the success of the first in 1964, which resulted in the release of the successful first Horst Jankowski album on Mercury…
…Reizner kicked off his trip in France, where he met with representatives of various Philips firms and the French firm in an exchange of product ideas discussion for two days. It was decided to release «The Four Seasons In Jazz,» an album of Vivaldi done instrumentally in jazz in France, and possibly albums by orkster Paul Mauriat in America…»

Since 1965 to 1967, five albums by Paul Mauriat were released there, but no one a single (except for 2 promo-singles in 1965 and 1967). Significance of the singles was huge, because these were used in jukeboxes, which were played in bars, cafes, clubs and restaurants across America (in use up to half a million) and played on dozens of radio stations. The popularity ratings of singles were important statistics for everybody who were involved in the music business.

In April 1967 Paul Mauriat recorded «Album No.5» in France, the tape was received in the USA, where it released as «Blooming Hits» in September. Album had no any surprises, except for one track — «Love is Blue».

Paul Mauriat remebered in 1996:
«To be honest, I wasn’t very fond of the song. The song was published by Philips, so I covered it. In the U.S., a Minneapolis DJ called Alan Mitchell started to play the song and asked the audience to react. He was flooded with phone calls. It quickly took off in the whole country.»

Record World magazine 1968/01/20 (USA), «IT’S MORE-EE-AT»:
«CHICAGO — A number of the nation’s djs have been having such a difficult time pronouncing the name of Paul Mauriat, whose «Love is Blue» is one of the country’s hottest singles, that Philips Records Product Manager Lou Simon is having prepared a special mailing piece showing the correct pronunciation of the French conductor’s name. It’s more-ee-at.»

But the disc jockey Alan Michell from WIND in Minneapolis was not the first person who notice the recording «Love is Blue». First of all, this melody pleased the owners of «Heilicher Brothers» – a distribution company in Minneapolis, whom serves musical automats.

From American press:

Record World magazine 1968/03/09 (USA), «HEILICHERS HELPED START ‘LOVE IS BLUE'»:
«MINNEAPOLIS — Today «Love is Blue» all over the U.S., but in Minneapolis, Heilicher Brothers are doing anything but singing the blues. «L’amour est Bleu» or «Love is Blue» by Paul Mauriat, the recent No. 1 hit, was originally a selection from the album «Blooming Hits,» Mauriat’s fourth LP. It was last September that Jay P. McCauley of Philips Records, along with the Heilicher promotional reps Dan Desmond, Ira Heilicher and Magoo brought the cut to the attention of Al Mitchell, then at station KQRS, who, with Dick Driscoll, first aired the tune. Twin Cities stations KRSI and WC’CO were next to go on «Love is Blue.» Because of special requests and orders to Heilicher Brothers, latter report, the tune was released as a single on Oct. 27, 1967. The disk was «picked» by KDWB rock music director Tac Hammer. WDGY picked up the song and later KIOA in Des Moines followed suit. Here the record zoomed to No. 1 on the playlist.»

Журнал «Record World» 1968/03/09 (США), «‘HEILICHERS’ ПОМОГЛИ СТАРТОВАТЬ ‘LOVE IS BLUE’»:

This success was important for everyone, but primarily for Paul Mauriat himself.

Paul Mauriat remembered in 1996:
«I couldn’t believe it when the president of Philips told me the song was climbing the Billboard charts. I was astounded, because it illustrates quite well the saying that you’re never a prophet in your own country, as it had sold less than 30,000 units in France. In the U.S., we sold 2 million singles and 800,000 LPs. The irony was that, in 1967, my contract was about to expire, and someone called Lou Reizner and suggested that Philips sign me for an additional three years because he was sure I would score a major hit soon. He was right!
Of course it did. But I didn’t realize at that time what it meant. For me, it was just a name on a listing. And it affected my whole life. But afterwards, I took it as a challenge. I had to prove that I was still able to sell, without the help of a No. 1 hit. Many in the industry said it would be a one-off, but the truth is that I have never stopped recording and selling records.»

«Who is Paul Mauriat?» – this question was asked in America by anyone who heard about the incredible success of «Love is Blue». From 11 to 18 February 1968 his visit to the USA took place as famous conductor (in 1966 he together with Francis Lai were accompanying Mireille Mathieu), including a TV filming on «Ed Sullivan Show» on Sunday, February 18.

After the USA, Paul Mauriat drove to Canada, where he also gave the press conferences.

In March, Robert Colby, sub-publisher of Paul Mauriat in the USA, brought to Paris all recordings of «Love is Blue» by various American artists. In France, the French song was recorded by three singers, including Michele Torr. Probably, her version closest to Mauriat’s instrumental version, could be recorded under his leadership.
