Их дуэт работал со звукорежиссером Виктором Паномаревым в небольшой студии на юге Москвы. Russian proverb “Prepare the sled in summer, and cart in winter” means to do everything in advance. Just this summer, Alla and Vitaly recorded 15 tracks for their new album. Their duet worked with sound engineer Viktor Panomaryov at small studio in South of Moscow.
Как и в прошлый раз, эта новая работа отразила интерес дуэта Покровских к музыке Поля Мориа. Сегодняшний альбом посвящен зимнему времени года. Like the last time, new work reflected Pokrovsky duo’s interest in the music by Paul Mauriat, and current album is dedicated to the winter season.
В качестве названия диска была выбрана прекрасная пьеса П.Мориа «СНЕЖНЫЙ ДЕСЕРТ», которая лучше всего передает зимнее настроение и чувства, связанные с приближающимся Рождеством и Новым годом. Bright sadness in “NAGEKIDORI” and “MEMORIES OF YESTERDAY”, tenderness in “CHAQUE SOIR UNE ROSE” and “TRANSPARENCE”, humor in “PETIT OISEAU MECANIQUE” and “COLORADO STRINGS”, baroque sound in “A LITTLE MUSIC AT THE COURT OF VERSAILLES”, lightness in “PETITE MELODIE”, and solemnity of “SERENADE A COLINE”, bright Brazilian spirit of “SABIA MARROM”, and finally three instrumental masterpieces “PENELOPE” by A.Alguero, “LA PEREGRINACION” by A.Ramirez and “TOCCATA” by G.Rolland show that cold guitar strings sound can be warm and clear.
«Самый выдающийся оркестр в мире — оркестр Джеймса Ласта отметит 50-летний юбилей гастролями в России», – сообщает башкирское концертное агентство RAZZLE WOLF. Концерты должны состояться в трех российских городах: Москве, Екатеринбурге и Уфе этой осенью. Это достаточно удивительное заявление, если учесть, что всемирно известного немецкого оркестра не существует уже 3 года после смерти Джеймса Ласта в 2015 году.
«The most outstanding orchestra in the world — James Last orchestra will celebrate the 50th anniversary in the tour in Russia», reports the Bashkirian concert agency RAZZLE WOLF. Concerts should take place in three Russian cities: Moscow, Yekaterinburg and Oufa this autumn. This statement is quite an amazing, considering that the world-famous German orchestra has not already existed for 3 years after the death of James Last in 2015.

Тогда одна уважаемая российская рекорд-компания выпустила специальный «Русский альбом» Джеймса Ласта и Поля Мориа. Это дало повод особо «одаренным» покупателям утверждать, что оба дирижера чуть ли не друзья-товарищи, работавшие, бок о бок в одном оркестре. Очень остроумно. И вот снова легенда об оркестре Джеймса Ласте обрастает все новыми подробностями, которые способны осложнить жизнь рядовым любителям музыки.

На самом деле тогда концертный тур по 10 городам сделал оркестр п/у Ж.Ж.Жустафре, оказавшийся слабым подобием знаменитого оркестра. В случае с «наследником» Джеймса Ласта – дирижером Грегом Фрэнсисом – российские промоутеры зашли намного дальше. Со всех афиш на нас смотрит Джеймс Ласт, а также рекламные промо-ролики не оставляют сомнений – он жив и здоров как прежде. Но трудно поверить в чудовищную «ошибку перевода», благодаря которой THE JAMES LAST TRIBUTE ORCHESTRA из Британии стал прославленным немецким JAMES LAST ORCHESTRA. При этом агентство RAZZLE WOLF игнорирует официальный трибьют-оркестр из самой Германии, созданный при поддержки семьи Джеймса Ласта. Видимо, по их мнению, этот коллектив недостоин гастролей по России.
Similar legends about ghost orchestras die hard. Let me remind you that in 2010 the Paul Mauriat orchestra was revived in the same way in Russia. Хотелось написать о завершившихся российских гастролях трибьют-оркестра Джеймса Ласта п/у Грэга Френсиса, но это невозможно. Вместо объявленного коллектива Екатеринбург, Москву и Уфу посетил совсем другой (уже третий по счету) оркестр! Это был Биг-бэнд Майка Джеймса — еще одного подражателя Джеймса Ласта из Великобритании. Таким образом, этот настоящий театр абсурда не имеет аналогов: афиши и реклама зовут на одного исполнителя, билеты продаются на другой коллектив, а фактически на сцене выступает уже третий оркестр!
We wanted to write about the last Russian tour of the James Last Tribute Orchestra conducted by Greg Francis, but it is imposible. A completely different (already the third orchestra!) instead of the announced artist toured in Yekaterinburg, Moscow and Uofa. This was the Mike James Big Band — another imitator of James Last from the UK. Thus, this true theater of the absurd is unique: the posters and ads say about one orchestra, the tickets are selling to the concert of another artist, and in fact the third orchestra performes on stage.

Одним из первых экземпляр их диска получил председатель жюри фестиваля музыки Поля Мориа композитор Александр Гольдштейн. Он считает их работу достойной памяти большого композитора. «…Благодаря их энергии мы вновь открываем для себя Поля Мориа и его музыку.» — так было написано им в обращении к будущим слушателям. Напомним, что Александр Борисович недавно сам выступил в качестве продюсера диска «Вальс для Поля Мориа», единственных на сегодняшний день студийных записей французского оркестра Ж.Ж. Жустафре. И хотя формат CD почти проиграл бой «цифровому контенту», все-таки он еще как-то держит оборону, если это касается записей классики.
One of the first copies of their album was presented to composer Alexander Goldstein, the chairman of the Paul Mauriat Festival jury. He considers that CD worthy of the memory of the great composer. «… Thanks to their energy, we again discover Paul Mauriat and his music.» — it was written by him in an address to future listeners. Let recall that Alexander Borisovich himself recently acted as the producer of the CD «Waltz for Paul Mauriat», the only studio recordings of the French orchestra J.J. Justafre today. And although the CD format almost lost the battle to «digital content», it still somehow keeps the defense, if it concerns the records of the classics.
Записи дуэта классических гитар можно было бы назвать «классическими» уже сейчас и не только по этой причине. Алла и Виталий очень старались, делая свои переложения музыки, бережно перенося звучание большого оркестра Поля Мориа для дуэта гитар. Интересно, что в ходе реализации проекта дуэт имел поддержку от еще одного участника фестиваля. Специальных слов благодарности от них заслужил отзывчивый молодой аранжировщик Артем Тетерин, мечтающий организовать в будущем свой эстрадный оркестр.
The recordings of a duet of classical guitars could be called «classical» now and not only for this reason. Alla and Vitaly tried very hard to make their music arrangements, carefully adapting the sound of Paul Mauriat grand orchestra for guitar duo. It is interesting that during the project implementation the duo had support from one more participant of the Festival. Special thanks from them were given to the sympathetic young arranger Artem Teterin whose dream is to organize his own orchestra in the future.
Звукорежиссурой альбома занимался заслуженный работник культуры России Р.Д. Рагимов, который за долгие годы работы на студии «Мелодия» записал не один десяток исполнителей, включая ВИА «Песняры» и инструментальный ансамбль «Мелодия». Гитарный дуэт он записывал лишь однажды — в далеком 1978 году. Так что, эти новые записи с гитарным дуэтом Покровских выдержаны в старых звуковых стандартах.
The sound of the album was engineered by Rafik Ragimov, the Honoured Art Worker of Russia who in his many years with the «Melodia» studio recorded dozens of performers, including folk-group «Pesnyary» and the «Melody» Instrumental Jazz Ensemble. Last time he recorded a guitar duet was in far 1978. So, the new recording with the Pokrovsky guitar duo is true to old sound standards.
Можно было бы сказать, что Поль Мориа был не только прекрасным архитектором, строящим свою музыку на прочном фундаменте классики, а еще и серьезным драматургом, умеющим заставить слушателя сопереживать его коротким музыкальным историям. «Когда я ее слушаю «Emotion», у меня часто набегает слеза», — поделился своими впечатлениями Иван Донченко, живущий в Париже — «Во французской эстрадной музыке существуют подобные песни, но эта была бы одной из самых лучших».

Paul Mauriat was the second French band leader, who sold in USA more than a 1 million copies of the record. The first was Franck Pourcel, when his single «Only you» became the best seller record in 1959, sharing the success of the American group «The Platters». American success of Paul Mauriat in February of ‘1968 exceeded expectations and brought him two gold discs. The instrumental record «L’amour est bleu» suddenly became No. 1. It was the most grandiose triumph of the French orchestra and French music, which no longer happened.

Unpredictable success, which is very American, provoked a wild demand for the work of composer Andre Popp. More than 250 artists all over the world recorded his «Love is Blue» during just 2 years.
During the second international fair in Cannes, MIDEM ‘1968, representatives of several American artists expressed a desire to record «Love is Blue», although a year ago they were not interested in this outsider of Eurovision Song Contest ‘67!

Так что успех был скорее закономерным, тем более, что задолго до «Love is Blue» у Поля Мориа имелся богатый опыт записи в студиях и он не прекращал упорно работать.
И наконец, определяющим стало то, что американским бизнесменам были интересны записи лучших европейских артистов, в частности оркестра Поля Мориа. Эти люди были сами музыкантами. Они не верили в случайность, они просто хорошо делали свое дело…
What was the secret of the success of «Love is Blue»?
It is said that the recording without vocals has few chances, on the other hand the instrumental composition is understandable without words to everyone. Hundreds of new instrumental tracks appear every year in the world. And a great melody and arrangement does not guarantee success…
Recording can become fashionable when it deserves the possibility of much repetition, if there is some appeal in the music. Of course, very important also the melody should have a right title.
So success was more natural, especially long before «Love is Blue», Paul Mauriat had a rich experience in recording studios and he did not stop working hard.
And finally, the decisive thing was that American businessmen were interesting to recordings of the best European artists, in particular the Paul Mauriat orchestra. These people were musicians themselves. They did not believe in randomness, they just did their job well…

In 1962, Philips Records, subsidiary of the leaders of the American market, Mercury Records, began to produce jazz albums by Michel Legrand and the albums of French The Swingle Singers singing Mozart and Bach. At the end of 1965 among the «elected» performers was the Paul Mauriat orchestra.

Since 1965 to 1967, five albums by Paul Mauriat were released there, but no one a single (except for 2 promo-singles in 1965 and 1967). Significance of the singles was huge, because these were used in jukeboxes, which were played in bars, cafes, clubs and restaurants across America (in use up to half a million) and played on dozens of radio stations. The popularity ratings of singles were important statistics for everybody who were involved in the music business.

Paul Mauriat remebered in 1996: «To be honest, I wasn’t very fond of the song. The song was published by Philips, so I covered it. In the U.S., a Minneapolis DJ called Alan Mitchell started to play the song and asked the audience to react. He was flooded with phone calls. It quickly took off in the whole country.»

It was last September that Jay P. McCauley of Philips Records, along with the Heilicher promotional reps Dan Desmond, Ira Heilicher and Magoo brought the cut to the attention of Al Mitchell, then at station KQRS, who, with Dick Driscoll, first aired the tune. Twin Cities stations KRSI and WC’CO were next to go on «Love is Blue.» Because of special requests and orders to Heilicher Brothers, latter report, the tune was released as a single on Oct. 27, 1967. The disk was «picked» by KDWB rock music director Tac Hammer. WDGY picked up the song and later KIOA in Des Moines followed suit. Here the record zoomed to No. 1 on the playlist.»

Paul Mauriat remembered in 1996: «I couldn’t believe it when the president of Philips told me the song was climbing the Billboard charts. I was astounded, because it illustrates quite well the saying that you’re never a prophet in your own country, as it had sold less than 30,000 units in France. In the U.S., we sold 2 million singles and 800,000 LPs. The irony was that, in 1967, my contract was about to expire, and someone called Lou Reizner and suggested that Philips sign me for an additional three years because he was sure I would score a major hit soon. He was right!
Of course it did. But I didn’t realize at that time what it meant. For me, it was just a name on a listing. And it affected my whole life. But afterwards, I took it as a challenge. I had to prove that I was still able to sell, without the help of a No. 1 hit. Many in the industry said it would be a one-off, but the truth is that I have never stopped recording and selling records.»

In March, Robert Colby, sub-publisher of Paul Mauriat in the USA, brought to Paris all recordings of «Love is Blue» by various American artists. In France, the French song was recorded by three singers, including Michele Torr. Probably, her version closest to Mauriat’s instrumental version, could be recorded under his leadership.

Paul Mauriat was the second French band leader, who sold in USA more than a 1 million copies of the record. The first was Franck Pourcel, when his single «Only you» became the best seller record in 1959, sharing the success of the American group «The Platters». American success of Paul Mauriat in February of ‘1968 exceeded expectations and brought him two gold discs. The instrumental record «L’amour est bleu» suddenly became No. 1. It was the most grandiose triumph of the French orchestra and French music, which no longer happened.
