ABOUT UNIQUE TOUR OF PARISIAN MUSIC-HALL «OLYMPIA» TO RUSSIA

One decade after the war, the USSR remained a closed country. It was the same «Iron Curtain», which has been crashed step by step. In 1956 there was a turning point in foreign policy, as a result cultural ties with foreign countries began to actively renew. Foreign musicians and actors began to visit the country according the cultural exchange programs. Until 1991 the State Association Gosconcert of the USSR was solely engaged in «import» and «export» of performers.

Although the Gosconcert widely opened the doors to the USSR for classical and folk musicians, at the same time very carefully selected pop performers. Invited pop artists had to meet strict criterion like «right» content and classical form of songs and high art of performance. After listened to the recordings of the proposed artists the special commission of the Gosconcert recommended or not recommended them for tours in the country.

Program of cultural exchanges was widely advertised by tour of French actor and singer Yves Montand in December of 1956. Mr.Montand and everyone subsequent after him like Gilbert Becaud (1965), Jacques Brel (1965), Charles Aznavour (1965), Leny Escudero (1966), Charles Trenet (1967), Juliette Greco (1967) the audience accepted with enthusiasm. Because of impossible making music business in the Soviets, great foreign artists came to country only once and rarely second time. But even one visit was enough to remember them for a long time!

In the summer of 1967 cities Moscow, Leningrad and Kazan accepted by turns the artists of the Music-Hall of France with the participation of the rising pop stars Michel Delpech and Mireille Mathieu. This visit became the answer of its artistic director Bruno Coquatrix to three visits of the Big Moscow Music-Hall to Paris when in 1964, 1965 and 1966 on the famous Parisian stage performed known masters from USSR — Yuri Gulyaev, Lyudmila Zykina, Edita Piekha, Nikolay Slichenko, vocal quartet «Accord», Muslim Magomaev.

The Air France airplane delivered artists from Paris to Sheremetyevo International Airport earlier than usual on schedule. And from this moment began their adventures in Russia. Already at the airport building they met at the passport control with the eternal Soviet phenomenon – terrible queues. Then everyone waited for the bus with the representatives of the Goskconcert. Only Johnny Stark, Bruno Coquatrix and Mireille Mathieu caught the opportunity to go to the city on a limousine that came for American who was their fellow traveler. In Moscow, all the artists were accommodated in an elite hotel for party workers «Sovetskaya». Another «surprise» was the fact that in the off-time it was not possible to call by phone Vladimir Golovin, the deputy director of the Gosconcert.

In Moscow, artists performed at the State Variety Theater, where 6 performances were held from 26 to 31 May.

Medley of famous songs of Paris performed by grand orchestra under the direction of Paul Mauriat had opened that concert program. After the orchestra accompanied the female trio «Les Fizz» which included Daniele Licari who dubbed the actress Cathrine Deneuve in the film «Les parapluies de Cherbourg». First part closed the young singer Michel Delpech singing own songs.
The whole second section was provided to Mireille Mathieu, who introduced the selected songs from her repertoire and prepared several surprises which were not noted in the concert program. These are two songs by Soviet composers: «Je suis là» («Don’t be in a hurry») by Arno Babajanian and «Au-devant de la vie» («Song of counterplan») from the film «Counterplan» (1932) by Dmitry Shostakovich which in the middle of 1930s was the symbol of the Popular Front in France.

The interpreter behind the stage briefly informed the audience the contents of each song before their performance, which knocked down the rhythm of at least Michel Delpech.

Through the efforts of Johnny Stark in her spare time Mireille Mathieu surrounded by French photographers and cameramen visited the sights of Moscow — Red Square, Exhibition of Achievements of National Economy (VDNKh), Central Lenin Stadium, skated along the river on a motor ship.

On May 1, a solemn reception in honor of the French guests was held in the Kremlin Palace of Congresses. Among the guests were singers Leonid Utesov, Maya Kristalinskaya, Gelena Velikanova and composer and humorist Nikita Bogoslovsky, the author of newspaper note in which he mentioned that not entirely satisfied with watching the performance because of the lack of a sense of «especial Parisian chic».

Then almost two weeks the artists spent in Leningrad, helding 15 concerts at the Winter Stadium from June 2 to 13, sometimes performing twice a day. During the first concert in the city of Russian Revolution, a big cake with 50 lit candles — one for the 50th anniversary of the October Revolution — was delivered to the stage.

One of days Mireille Mathieu introduced another and completely new French song «Quand fera-t-il jour, Camarade?» сomposed by Paul Mauriat at the same time in the Leningrad hotel «Astoria». Idea of song was suggested by poet Gaston Bonheur because Paul Mauriat shared the left views as well.

Usually, Gosconcert did not special advertising of tours because it was enough to hang one small poster at the entrance to hall to fill the concert venue. In addition, people in country already knew in absentia all important overseas singers, thanks to the music broadcasting and the massive unofficial distribution of their recordings on magnetic tapes among music lovers. Attractive posters with Mireille Mathieu’s photo would have made a real advertisement in New York, but not in Moscow! — not everyone could go to the concerts. Although the tickets were inexpensive, they were not almost available for freely sold in the cash-box office.

Wide popularity of Mireille Mathieu coincided with her visit to the country and was supported by television. But only in the New Year eve (six months later!) on January 1, 1968, the audience saw she in TV show «Blue Light». Also, the Leningrad television studio prepared a short film «Meetings with Mireille Mathieu», which included a new song about the revolution, filmed on the legendary cruiser «Aurora».

In addition to the Hermitage, Frenchmen admired the white nights in Leningrad. They liked to walk around the city until 3-4 AM, despite the fact that they did not sleep enough.

The Music-Hall of France tour ended in Kazan, which was a grandiose event for this city, whose residents had never met foreign artists before. Frenchmen flew there from Leningrad by an internal flight on June 16 and performed at the newly opened Sports Palace until June 21. They were all settled in the neighborhood in the most modern hotel «Volga». Numerous capitals sights in Kazan artists replaced local Kazan Kremlin and the beach on the bank of the Volga river. It was almost impossible to call in France from the city yet because of a seven-day war in the Middle East began on July 5.

Nevertheless, the good impressions from the warm reception over and over again outweighed the mass of various inconveniences and especially the tireless control by the special services — all that Bruno Cockatrix figuratively called staying on «the galley».

The artists returned to France on June 22 through Moscow.
